CAMP Corsa Nanotech Ice Axe Review
October 22, 2013
I recently upgraded my tried and true Black Diamond Raven Pro ice axe to the CAMP Corsa Nanotech ice axe. The Corsa Nanotech weighs a ridiculous 8.8 ounces (allowing me to drop 6.3 oz.) but feels as sturdy as my old Raven. It is primarily constructed of aluminum but has Sandvik Nanoflex steel reinforcements on the spike and the pick to improve durability.
It also forgoes the traditional mountaineering ice axe form by employing a slightly curved shaft that allows it to be used for minor climbing while still allowing you to drive it into the snow to be used as a personal anchor. I recently used the Corsa Nanotech when I had to strap my skis onto my back and boot it the last 100 yards to reach the top of a summit and, due to the curved shaft, preformed way better than other traditional ice axes. It also has a grip on the bottom section of the shaft to help you use it in just this manner.
There were times when I would leave my ice axe at home when I was heading out on alpine ski tours just because I didn’t want to deal with the weight. Not anymore.
