Petzl Tikka RXP Headlamp Review

First off I must say I am blown away by the reactive lighting technology that Petzl has developed and included in the Petzl Tikka RXP headlamp.  It is awesome. I look far away and the brightness almost instantly ramps up.  I look back down at my map and the light is again reduced to the perfect brightness. I also really like how bright this headlamp is.  This is the only headlamp I know of that gets above 200 lumens without having a remove battery pack making it very lightweight.  Cycling through the various modes isn’t the most intuitive but you get used to it pretty quick.

The only thing I really don’t like about this headlamp is the battery life.  It only lasts about 10 hours and because it uses a rechargeable battery you can’t just toss new batteries in when you go dark.  Outside of activities like bike commuting where you can recharge it every night I don’t think I can justify bringing this headlamp into the backcountry – 10 hours of battery just isn’t enough.

Great for bike commuting or other activities where battery longevity isn’t an issue.

The Tikka RXP is a formidable piece of kit. I use mine when checking livestock at night and don’t want to carry a torch. For that reason, I’m not overly fussed about the battery life as the usage is minimal and I’m always close to home.

That use case totally makes sense and is the perfect application for this headlamp. On Petzl’s website they list a replacement battery pack that accepts AAA batteries allowing you to operate in the best of both worlds. Use the rechargeable battery when you are close to home and swap in AAA’s when you are on the trail. I would be very curious to see how the performance of this headlamp changes when you swap in disposable alkaline batteries for the lithium ion battery pack that is supplied. If anyone has been able to test this out I’d love to hear the results! Thanks for the comment and good luck with the livestock!
